The Art of Fusing Glass and Metal: Understanding Vitreous Enamel Jewellery
If you've ever wondered what makes vitreous enamel jewellery so special, you're in for a treat. This beautiful craft combines the durability of metal with the vibrant colours and glossy finish of glass, creating pieces that are truly one-of-a-kind. At MaisyPlum, I'm passionate about creating handcrafted jewellery using this stunning technique, and so I'd love to share what makes it so magical.
What is Vitreous Enamel Jewellery?
Vitreous enamel jewellery is essentially powdered glass fused directly onto metal surfaces. The result? Absolutely gorgeous pieces that catch the light beautifully and come in virtually any colour you can imagine. What makes it even better is that this isn't some modern invention – artisans have been using this technique for centuries. It's a timeless craft that brings together the best of both worlds: the strength of metal and the beauty of coloured glass.
The pieces I create at MaisyPlum showcase contemporary, colourful designs that range from earrings and bangles to necklaces and art pieces. Each item is handcrafted with care, making every piece unique and special.
The Fascinating Fusing Process
Now, let's talk about how this magic actually happens. The process of creating vitreous enamel jewellery is genuinely fascinating and requires real skill and patience.
Step by Step
First, the metal base – usually copper or silver – is carefully prepared and cleaned. Any impurities need to be removed to ensure the enamel adheres properly. Next comes the fun part: applying the enamel. This powdered glass is either sifted onto the metal surface or mixed with a liquid binder and painted onto the metal surface. You can layer different colours and different types of enamel powder to create stunning effects and unusual designs.
Once the enamel is applied, the real transformation happens. The piece is placed in a kiln and heated to incredibly high temperatures – usually between 800 and 830 degrees Centingrade. At these temperatures, the powdered glass melts and fuses permanently to the metal, creating a smooth, glass-like surface that's incredibly durable.
The cooling process is just as important as the heating. As the piece cools, the glass and metal bond together, creating a permanent union that won't chip or peel away easily.
Why I Love It
What I adore most about vitreous enamel is how it allows me to create jewellery that's both beautiful and built to last. The colours are vibrant, the finish is gorgeous, and each piece tells a story of craftsmanship and creativity. No two pieces are ever really the same making each piece unique to the wearer. Whether you're wearing a delicate enamel earring or displaying an art piece, you're wearing a little piece of history and artistry combined.
